EC Cartel to Make Season Debut in Sam Houston Distance Challenge

The 7-year-old gelding drew post 3 for Saturday's 870-yard stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.

Eight distance specialists have been entered in Saturday's Zoetis Sam Houston Distance Challenge.

Alejandra Carrion's EC Cartel will make his 7-year-old season debut in Saturday's 870-yard, $21,510 Zoetis Sam Houston Distance Challenge Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.

A son of Tinys First Corona trained by Judd Kearl, EC Cartel brings a three-race win streak into this race. The gelding will be making his first start since December 19, when he scored a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the $25,000 IP 870 Stakes at Evangeline Downs.

Other contenders include Bullard Farms' Fire On The Fly, a 6-year-old Jet Cartel gelding who is also entered in Thursday's Grade 3, $50,000 Pauls Valley Stakes at Remington Park. Trained by Tommy Bullard, Fire On The Fly has a two-race win streak that includes the January 9, $15,000 Marathon Stakes at Louisiana Downs.
