Pete A. Scarmardo's Time For Wine, a California-bred 4-year-old daughter of champion Mr Jess Perry, earned her first stakes victory in Saturday's $26,100 Merial Texas Distaff Challenge Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.

Prepped by Leon Bard, Time For Wine covered 400 yards in :20.074 under jockey Francisco Calderon. The mare was making her first start since November 6, when she ran fourth in the AQHA Members Plus Stakes at Lone Star Park.

Time For Wine was bred by Vessels Stallion Farm LLC. The mare is out of Fine Wines, a winning daughter of all-time leading sire First Down Dash and a finalist in the 2003 La Primera del Ano Derby at Los Alamitos.

Raced exclusively in Texas, Time For Wine has won three of 12 starts and has banked $27,993. The mare's first-ever stakes win earned her a berth in the $125,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) at Los Alamitos on October 29.

Lil Effortless Reign finished second, a half of a length behind Time For Wine. Kitty Kat Galore B, the 3-10 favorite in the field of eight, ran third and was followed by Shiner Blond, Vital Temp, N Bee C, Sure Fire Flyer, and Cabana Girl.
