Bannister Tops John Deere California Juvenile Challenge Qualifiers

The Oklahoma-bred gelding leads the way to the August 20, $32,500-added final at Los Alamitos.

Tony Guymon rode Bannister to a 1 3/4-length victory in the last of three John Deere California Juvenile Challenge trials at Los Alamitos on Saturday.

Trained by Monty Arrossa for owners Denny and Sandy Weigt, Bannister ccovered 350 yards in :17.565 and set the fastest qualifying time to the August 20, $32,500-added final. The Maknmoves gelding was winning for the fourth time in five outs and bumping his bankroll to $36,915.

Bannister was bred in Oklahoma by J. Garvan Kelly and Nancy Yearsley. He was making his first-ever start in California off of an intermountain region campaign during which he won the May 20 Beehive Futurity (R) at Weber Downs in Ogden, Utah.

Bannister was a $6,200 buy at last year's Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City.
