A & D Racing's Shiner Blond scored her first career stakes win in Saturday's 400-yard, $25,740 Merial Arapahoe Distaff Challenge Stakes at Arapahoe Park.

Ridden by Raul Gutierrez for trainer Zachary Quezada, Shiner Blond defeated Keepyourshirton by 1 1/4 lengths in :19.870 against a 5-mph head wind. In addition to earning the $12,612 winner's share of the purse, the 3-year-old Make It Anywhere filly landed a berth in the Grade 1, $150,000 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship at Los Alamitos on October 29.

"She's always been a class horse," said Gutierrez. "She broke on the lead and just went on with it and was feeling good."

A homebred, Shiner Blond has two of 10 starts. The filly's resume includes a fourth-place finish, one length behind winnerr Careless Lightning, in last year's 350-yard, $100,000 TQHA Sires' Cup Futurity (RG3) at Retama Park near San Antonio, Texas.

Betrothen, the 7-10 favorite in the field of seven, finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Shiner Blond, and was followed by Swingin Flight, Paula Cruz, Ivory Bell, and Cover Girl Two.
