The Fiscal Cliff, a homebred son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon racing for Tom Lepic of Iowa City, Iowa, is the fastest qualifier to the July 2, $40,000 Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge at Ruidoso Downs.

Ridden by Cesar Gomez for trainer Kasey Willis and making his first-ever start at Ruidoso on Friday, The Fiscal Cliff won the first of two trials by a half of a length from multiple stakes winner BF Fooserageous. The colt covered 400 yards against a 7-mph head wind in :19.960 while scoring his seventh win in 10 outs.

Second-fastest qualifier They Seis Im Quick won the second heat for owners Robert Odom III, Randall Dees, and Scott Bryant. A $50,000 buy at the 2014 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the gelded son of champion Tres Seis was ridden by Omar Reyes for trainer Mike Joiner.
