The Fiscal Cliff, a homebred son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon owned by Tom Lepic of Iowa City, Iowa, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday's 400-yard, $44,370 Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge at Ruidoso Downs.
Trained by Kasey Willis, The Fiscal Cliff set the fastest qualifying time with his half-length victory in the first of two trials on June 17. The bay colt has earned $222,433 from 10 outs, and his three stakes wins include last year's $201,000 Jim Bader Futurity (R) for Iowa-breds at Prairie Meadows.
The Fiscal Cliff drew post 10 and will be ridden by Cesar Gomez. The colt's nine opponents include Birrell Farms' Bf Fooserageous, a multiple stakes winning homebred daughter of champion Foose trained by Wes Giles. The fourth-fastest qualifier, Bf Fooserageous is coming off of a Sunland Park spring campaign during which she ran second, a neck behind winner Good Job Honey, in the May 16, 400-yard West Texas Derby (G3).
Adrian Ramos will ride Bf Fooserageous from post 6.
The winner of the this race will earn a berth in the October 29, $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G2) at Los Alamitos. The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds:
