Nucky, Famous Joker Top Challenge Trials at Turf Paradise

The two geldings will return in their respective finals on April 30.

Two sets of Challenge trials were contested at Turf Paradise on Saturday.

Rogelio Carbajal Santos' Nucky is the fastest qualifier to the April 30, $55,000 Bank of America Turf Paradise Challenge Stakes.

Ridden by Luis Yescas for trainer Eliazar Salas, Nucky won the last of two trials by a half of a length on Saturday. The 4-year-old son of Dominyun covered 440 yards in :21.523 while making his season debut.

Nucky was bred in Texas by Bobby D. Cox. The bay gelding has won five of 11 starts and has banked $113,169, and he began his career with a four-race win streak that included the 2015 West Texas Futurity (G2) at Sunland Park.

Also on Saturday, Famous Joker broke his maiden with 1 3/4-length victory in the second of three 350-yard John Deere Turf Paradise Juvenile Stakes trials.

Racing for Yuriana Ramirez, who acquired Famous Joker for $100,000 at last year's Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the One Famous Eagle gelding covered the distance in :18.236 against a reported 7-mph head wind. Famous Joker was bred in Louisiana by Grant Farms LLC, and he has earned $1,863 from two outs.

Famous Joker is a half brother to 2010 All American Futurity (G1) winner Mr Piloto.
