Sent to post at odds of 20-1, Genuine Version scored his second career stakes win in Friday's $36,090 Adequan California Derby Challenge at Los Alamitos.
Racing for Gary Laramie and Janet Oakeson and trained by Monty Arrossa, Genuine Version went 400 yards in :19.815, and his margin of victory was a nose from Doctor Fantastic, who was clocked in :19.817. Cesar DeAlba rode the sorrel son of Winners Version who earned $17,323 and a berth in the October 14, $180,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G3) at Prairie Meadows.
Genuine Version has raced in Utah, Wyoming, and Washington and was making just his third start at Los Alamitos.
“I’ve really liked this horse all along,” Arrossa said. “We’ve run him here a couple of times, and we just hadn't figured him out. We thought he just needed some experience under the lights. We felt good about him coming into this race.
"I was surprised to see him 20-1 on the morning line, and that he went off at such of long odds," the trainer added. "He’s run two races here against older horses and had run two respectable races. I thought the horse was coming into a good race here tonight.”
Genuine Version was bred in Utah by Allreds Horse Haven. The gelding has banked $46,446 from 12 starts, and his five wins include last year's Utah Bred Futurity (R) at Wyoming Downs.
The Louisiana Dream, 3-10 favorite Bannister, Down N Runnin, Eagle Appeals, Buckshot Cartel, and Gold Diggin Queen completed the order of finish.
