The homebred filly gets her first stakes victory.
August 19, 2017
Reliance Ranches LLC's SC Vapor Trail broke sharply from her rail post and sprinted to a half-length win in the $44,460 John Deere California Juvenile Challenge Stakes at Los Alamitos on Saturday.
Prepped by Mike Robbins, who gave a leg up to jockey Jesus Ayala, SC Vapor Trail covered 350 yards in :17.609. The homebred daughter of Corona Cartel and champion Spit Curl Diva earned $20,896 and a berth in the October 14, $130,000 John Deere Challenge Championship (G2) at Prairie Meadows near Des Moines, Iowa.
SC Vapor Trail has won three of seven starts and has banked $77,249. Earlier this season, the filly finished sixth in the 350-yard, $1-million Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos.
“I’m really pleased with her,” Robbins said. “She’s been showing us all along, and tonight she really stepped her game up. She didn’t break as sharp as she can, but she really came running and that made up for it.
"She’s pretty seasoned," the trainer added. "This was her seventh race this year, and she is continually getting better. She’s in the Black Gold Series in Oklahoma (at Will Rogers Downs). We’ll see how she pulls up, and we’ll get with the McKinneys (of Reliance Ranches) and figure out a game plan for her.”
Apollitical Stone, Missmerizing, Honeys Pop A Tac, Favorite Hot Cartel, Speedy Elvis, R Sturdy Boy, Phoxxy, and Royal Tricky Lady completed the order of finish.
