Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge Trials Set for Saturday

Grade 3 winner Maxx is among the 25 3-year-olds entered at Ruidoso Downs.

Maxx, a graded stakes winning son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon owned by Irma Z. Vargas, is among the 25 sophomores entered in Saturday's 400-yard Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge trials at Ruidoso Downs.

Conditioned by reigning AQHA champion trainer Judd Kearl, Maxx has earned $78,299 from eight starts, and his three wins include a neck victory in last year's 350-yard, $69,000 John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3). The brown gelding drew post 3 and will be ridden by Jose Alvarez in the last of three trials.

Maxx's seven opponents in the third heat include Donnie E. Johnson's Eagleistic, a multiple graded stakes placed son of Flyingwitheagles trained by John Foutch. Eagleistic has banked $79,338 ffrom 11 outs, and his season resume includes a second-place finish, a neck behind winner Wild Mares Milk, in the April 1, 400-yard West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park.

Eagleistic drew post 6 and will be ridden by Mauro Salcedo.

Trainer Todd Fincher will send out Mahoney N Tacklebery for owner Ben Peterson. A homebred son of Favorite Cartel, the sorrel gelding has won four of 11 starts, including last year's $107,000 Western States Breeders' Futurity (R) at Casper, Wyoming, and he has earned $117,839.

Mahoney N Tacklebery will be ridden by Ricky Ramirez from pmost 6 in the second trial.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the July 1, $60,000-est. Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge.
