Irma Z. Vargas' Maxx won the last of three Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge trials on Saturday, and the Pyc Paint Your Wagon gelding is the fastest qualifier to the $22,500-added final on July 1.

Ridden by Jose Alvarez for trainer Judd Kearl, Maxx covered 400 yards in :19.555, and his margin of victory was a neck from second-fastest qualifier Marseille. The gelding was winning for the first time in three starts this season.

Maxx was bred in Oklahoma by Jim Gubas. All told, he has won four of nine outs, including last year's John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge (G3), and he has banked $86,824.
