Maxx is Morning-Line Choice in Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge

The fastest qualifier will be seeking his second stakes victory.

Maxx, a brown son of Pyc Paint Your Wagon campaigned by Irma Z. Vargas, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday's 400-yard, $48,510 Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge Stakes at Ruidoso Downs.

The fastest qualifier, Maxx is trained by reigning AQHA champion trainer Judd Kearl. The gelding is coming off of a neck victory as the odds-on favorite in the last of three trials on June 17. All told, Maxx has earned won four of nine races and has earned $80,699, and he was a finalist in last year's 400-yard, $1-million Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.

Maxx drew post 3 and will be ridden by Jose Alvarez. His nine opponents include Rockin J Running Horses' Rock About It. The third-fastest qualifier and a finalist in the June 3, $297,000 Heritage Place Derby (G2) at Remington Park, Rock About It is a sorrel son of Rock Solid Jess trained by Tammy Johnson.

Rock About It drew post 7 and will be ridden by Benito Baca.

The winner of this race will earn a berth in the October 14 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G3) at Prairie Meadows. The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds:
