Flash back 22 years, to when a Texas-bred with a pop-culture name ruled on the track.
Mars Blackman was bred by Larry Brumbaugh and campaigned during his championship year by James Kelly and Charles Grannon. The champion 3-year-old gelding of 1995 that year won six of eight starts, including the AQHA Derby Challenge Championship (G2).
He would eventually race 35 times, winning or placing in 28 of them and earning $382,531.
The horse was by On A High and out of the Special Effort mare Heavy Spender.
