Mi Amor Secreto Tops Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge Qualifiers

The gelded son of The Louisiana Cartel is the fastest qualifier to the June 30, $68,200 final.

Kelly Perez's Mi Amor Secreto on Friday set the fastest qualifying time to the June 30, $68,200 Adequan Ruidoso Derby Challenge at Ruidoso Downs.

Ridden by Santos Carrizales for trainer Marcos Carrizales, Mi Amor Secreto won the second of four 400-yard trials by one length in :20.271. The homebred son of The Louisiana Cartel was winning for the second time in five outs.

Second-fastest qualifier Corona Ranger won the fourth heat by a clear 1 1/2 lengths in :20.324. Agustin Silva rode the Corona Cartel gelding for owner Vanessa Bartoo of Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, and trainer John Stinebaugh.

Corona Ranger was bred in Oklahoma by Bollenbach Farms. The gelding has won four of 10 starts, including last year's Evangeline Downs Futurity, and he has banked $171,965.

"He's paid up in the All American Derby," said Stinebaugh of Corona Ranger. "We'll run him in the (Adequan) finals and then probably go to the All American Derby trials from there."
