Delta Downs will open on April 25.

Delta Downs is gearing up for its 2014 American Quarter Horse season which begins this weekend. The Vinton, Louisiana, oval will host live racing on Friday and Saturday before going to its regular Wednesday through Saturday format for the remainder of the season which runs through July 12. Post times each evening will be at 6:15 p.m. CT.

Delta Downs will offer a 26-race stakes schedule this year which begins on opening night with the $20,000 Delta Dash, featuring 2012 Firecracker Futurity winner Ronnie James. Saturday’s featured race is the $50,000 John Alleman Memorial (RG3) with Open Me a Corona going postward after taking the $1 million LQHBA Breeders’ Futurity (RG1) in 2012.

Other major stakes races on the 2014 calendar include May 23 and 24, when the track hosts the Louisiana Lassie and Louisiana Laddie Futurities respectively; July 4 and 5 when the Firecracker Futurity (G2) and the Firecracker Derby take center stage; and closing night July 12 when the track presents another edition of Louisiana Showcase night featuring eight stakes races and the richest event of the year, the $200,000-added Lee Berwick Futurity.

Fans will want to keep their eye on last year’s top horsemen as they return to Delta Downs this season. Jockey John Hamilton will be gunning of this third consecutive leading rider title. Kenneth Roberts Sr. will attempt to win his third straight and sixth overall training title after snaring last year’s crown on closing day. And Geral Dewit will be defending his leading owner title after seeing 10 of his runners make it to the winner’s circle in 2013.
