Press Release

World Champion Last To Fire is excepted to return to the races for the Vessels Maturity trials.

Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas’ Last To Fire, the 2013 world champion, posted a strong 220-yard turn and work under jockey Eduardo Nicasio on Saturday morning at Los Alamitos.

Last To Fire won the Grade 1 Champion of Champions, Go Man Go Handicap and Vessels Maturity last year. The connections of the gelding by Walk Thru Fire are now pointing him to the Vessels Maturity trials to be held on Sunday, June 15, at Los Alamitos. The Vessels Maturity final, which carries an automatic starting berth to this year’s Champion of Champions, will be held on Sunday, July 6. Last To Fire is now under the care of trainer Sergio Fiscal.

“Eduardo said the horse felt good and very strong,” said Jose Avila, the son of co-owner Jesus Avila. “He didn’t have to push the horse at all. The horse looks like he came back great from the workout. He’ll have another workout in a couple of weeks. The next one will be a 350-yard work from the gate. We didn’t do any surgery on him after he won the Champion of Champions. We just gave him some rest.”

In his championship-winning season, Last To Fire won five of six starts and earned $515,209. For his career, the gelding bred by the Estate of Spencer Childers has won eight of 19 starts with earnings of $1,087,545.
