All American Post Positions
Futurity fastest qualifier Exquisite Stride draws Post 8.

The connections of finalists to the $2.6 million All American Futurity (G1) and $1.9 million All American Derby (G1) gathered at a post position draw luncheon in the Turf Club at Ruidoso on Thursday, August 28, to select where their horses would break from.
Horsemen picked their posts, with a draw first to determine the order that the connections of qualifiers would follow in making their picks, and then each set of connections in turn made their choice. For both the Futurity and Derby, the first horsemen to make their selections picked the 1 post on the rail.
The Derby qualifiers went first, with trainer James J. “JJ” Gonzales winning the draw to allow him the initial pick. Gonzales selected the 1 post for San Gregorio Racing Stable’s Five Bar Cartel, who for trainer Danny Montes had been running in California before coming to New Mexico for the All American.
“I watched his replays and the colt runs real well on the inside,” Gonzales said. “He qualified for the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1) on the rail. It didn’t bother him at all – he ran strong and straight as can be, and he’s a good gate horse so it doesn’t bother him to stand there a little while and I wasn’t worried about that, either. So I decided to take a chance and put him in the 1 hole.”
Rainbow Derby (G1) winner Houdini was installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite. The Valiant Hero gelding will be making his fifth start of the year in the August 31 race.
Champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. qualified three horses in the All American Derby, and chose to ride Big Dashing Perry. Reigning champion jockey Cody Jensen qualified three horses, and chose to ride Houdini.
The Futurity selections followed the Derby draw, and it was the same thing. Trainer Juan Aleman picked the rail for Rancho El Cabresto’s Apollitical Blood. And for the same reason.
“He won his trial from the 1 hole,” Aleman said. “He runs good down there.”
All American Futurity fastest qualifier Exquisite Stride is set to break from Post 8, with second-fastest qualifier Thunderball B immediately to his outside. Bodacious Eagle, breaking from Post 2, has been installed as the morning-line favorite at 7-2.
Jockey G.R. Carter Jr. qualified four of the 10 horses, and chose to ride Tempting Destiny in the final. Jockey Ricky Ramirez qualified two horses – Sam Crow and Bodacious Eagle – and chose to ride Sam Crow.
Both Im A Fancy PYC in the Futurity and Potenzza in the Derby are expected to be scratched from the finals.
