Moonist Rises in Poll

Grade 1 winner Moonist rises in the AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com Poll.

Q-Racing Journal

Moonist rose sharply in this week's racing poll.

A romping win in the Golden State Derby (G1) propelled Moonist all the way to No. 2 in the latest AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Poll for older horses. Now, it’s top-ranked Houdini’s turn to show what he can do in this Sunday’s All American Derby (G1). The sophomore stars pace the rankings for 3-year-olds and older as the all-important Labor Day Weekend approaches.

Moonist was the only major mover in this week’s poll, rising four spots after he advanced to a sparkling 7-for-8 mark on the season. The three-time major derby finals winner was untouchable in the Golden State Derby at Los Alamitos, winning by 1 3/4 lengths. Houdini will aim for his fourth straight win on Sunday and his second major derby of the season after taking the Rainbow Derby (G1) in July.

As for the 2-year-old rankings, there were no major changes this week to the poll, which is led by Kiss My Hocks. That figures to change following Monday’s All American Futurity (G1). The nine-horse final in the sport’s ultimate race includes a pair of nationally ranked juveniles this week – No. 7 JM Miracle and No. 8 Bodacious Eagle. Both have made the finals of all three major futurities at Ruidoso Downs this season.
