Los Alamitos Race Course announced on Wednesday that the purse of the $972,100 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1) on November 22 has been distributed. In addition, Los Alamitos announced that four of the 10 participants tested positive for the B2-agonist Clenbuterol, and eight were positive for the B2 agonist Albuterol.
Los Alamitos Race Course ordered for hair and blood samples taken from the 10 Super Derby finalists at Los Alamitos on Monday, November 17. The samples were delivered to the University of California, Davis, where tests for Clenbuterol (via hair sample) and Albuterol (via blood sample) were conducted.
The four Super Derby finalists positive for Clenbuterol are Foose Cash SR, Big Sky Lad, Dare To Flair and Dont Walk Peacefully.
The eight Super Derby finalists positive for Albuterol are Five Bar Cartel, Foose Cash SR, Dare To Flair, Mr Corona Cartel, Mistic Rose, Dimes And Nicks, Dont Walk Peacefully, and Fire Up Willie. Foose Cash SR won the Super Derby, which was contested as an exhibition, non-wagering race on November 22. The Super Derby was scheduled for November 1.
Highest Fire, who finished second in the Super Derby, was the only horse in the Super Derby with neither Clenbuterol nor Albuterol detected.
“We are paying out the purse to the Super Derby because we have no other recourse under the current regulations,” said Ed Allred, owner of Los Alamitos Race Course. “This will not be the case next year. Los Alamitos will have new house rules in affect. Every horse that qualifies to a major Los Alamitos race will have to undergo testing and if any horse tests positive the horse will not be eligible to compete in the final.”
The Los Alamitos Super Derby was presented as an exhibition race without pari-mutuel betting because track management was concerned by inconsistent performances by some of the qualifiers. The order of finish in the Super Derby final follows: Foose Cash SR, Highest Fire, Dare To Flair, Five Bar Cartel, Big Sky Lad, Dimes And Nicks, Fire Up Willie, Dont Walk Peacefully, Mistic Rose, and Mr Corona Cartel. Trainer Eloy Navarro saddled eight of the 10 horses that qualified to the Super Derby, including eventual winner Foose Cash SR. Juan Aleman trains Big Sky Lad, while Danny Montes trains Five Bar Cartel.
The California Horse Racing Board conducted its own post race testing of the Super Derby qualifiers two weeks prior to the Los Alamitos testing. The state has not released its test results.
Los Alamitos has conducted testing on each of the 10 finalists to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity to be held on Sunday, December 14, and on each of the finalists to the Golden State Futurity, which was held on November 2. Results will be released at a later time.
