'Moon', 'Fire' Top Final Poll
The 2014 poll closes with Moonist, Heza Dasha Fire atop the lists.
December 30, 2014
The season’s final AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Polls came to near-unanimous conclusions as Heza Dasha Fire and Moonist finished No. 1 in the 2-year-old and 3-year-olds-and-older divisions, respectively. Moonist gathered all 110 possible balloting points, while Heza Dasha Fire fell one point shy of perfection at 109.
Among the 2-year-olds, no less than four different runners made strong cases for the top spot throughout the year with three of them – Heza Dasha Fire, Kiss My Hocks and JM Miracle – spending time at No. 1. At 6-for-7 on the year, Heza Dasha Fire proved strong from April through December, losing only the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1) final at season’s end to eventual No. 2-ranked He Looks Hot. Kiss My Hocks’ season included multiple futurity finals wins, including the Ruidoso Futurity (G1), while JM Miracle captured the prestigious All American Futurity (G1) on Labor Day.
Moonist dominated the balloting among the older horses. The 3-year-old won nine of 10 races on the season, including his last eight straight. The John Cooper trainee campaigned exclusively at Los Alamitos this year. The season-ending Championship at Sunland Park (G1) proved a popular and deep gathering of those in pursuit of Moonist for the top spot. RCJ Major Storm upset the field at 11-1 odds and vaulted to No. 3 in the polls for his effort. Others from the Sunland showcase to finish nationally ranked included No. 2 Stimulus, No. 4 JRC Callas First, No. 5 Too Flash For You, No. 6 Bon Accord and No. 8 Hes Relentless.
AQHA racing champions will be announced January 21 at Heritage Place Sale Co. in Oklahoma City. The weekly rankings now go on hiatus until making their annual return in March.
