Melton Gets 1,500th Win
Trainer Lin Melton reaches a training milestone.
June 1, 2014
Lin Melton scored the 1,500th Quarter Horse victory of his career and just two races later he added his 1,501st lifetime victory Sunday at Los Alamitos Race Course.
One of the nation’s leading Quarter Horse trainers for years, Melton reached the 1,500-win milestone after Elmont Bundy’s 3-year-old gelding BF Outlandishversion won the seventh race by a length with jockey Oscar Peinado in the irons. Bred by Birrell Farms, the Utah-bred BF Outlandishversion covered the 330 yards in :16.898. His next victory came with Lisa Anderson’s 2-year-old gelding Jumpn Jehoshaphat in the ninth and final race on the card. Melton had been patiently waiting for this victory since winning race number 1,499 in Utah in late April. Melton was excited to reach the exclusive club.
“I believe there are only about a dozen trainers to have won 1,500 Quarter Horse races,” he said while explaining what it was like to win 1,500 sprints. “Winning the first 100 races was very difficult, the next 1,300 were easy, but the last 100 were very hard. I’ve had many years with a lot of wins and one season I had over 100 wins and was the second leading trainer in the nation only behind Blane Schvaneveldt. This is a special victory. It means a lot. I had to wait a while after 1,499, but I am glad my wait is over.”
Melton is one of top conditioners in the history of the Northwest region. Los Alamitos has been his home base in recent years and his local stables currently includes the stakes winner Dynasty Red and the multiple stakes finalist Smithy. Since beginning his career in 1973, Melton’s runners have earned nearly $6 million. Stakes winners he has trained include Grade 1 winners Juno Dat Honor and Famous Chapelle, and Grade 2 winners Shes A Royal Flirt, Mr Deep Pockets, Royal Peepers and Famous Alibis. He also trained the multiple Grade 1 finalist and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity runner-up Meteoric.
Jumpn Jehoshaphat is eligible to compete in this year’s trials to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity.
