Retama Opens June 6

The Texas track will host 28 stakes races for American Quarter Horses.

Retama Park opens its 20-day meet on Friday.

Retama Park opens its live American Quarter Horse racing meet tomorrow night, June 6. With a first post at 6:45 p.m. Central Daylight Time each Friday and Saturday, the meet runs 20 days through August 9.

The Quarter Horse stakes schedule is highlighted by the $100,000-added TQHA Sales Futurity (RG2) for Texas-bred 2-year-olds going 350 yards on July 26. A total of 28 stakes races are slated for this year’s race meet.

Retama Park also opens at 10:30 each morning for simulcasting. The gates will open at 9 this Saturday, June 7, to accommodate the crowd expected for the simulcast of California Chrome’s bid for Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown at Belmont Park.

The meet’s opening night includes the $20,000-guaranteed Selma Stakes for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares. The $15,000-guaranteed Universal City Handicap for 3-year-olds will run on Saturday.

The second Friday of the season will include the trials for the $50,000-added TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) and that Saturday will have the trials for the $25,000-added Sires’ Cup Derby. The finals of both races will be Saturday, June 28.

The $35,000-added TQHA Classic Stakes (RG3) is July 25 and the $75,000-added Retama Park Derby is July 26.

The August 9 closing day includes two $25,000-added stakes, the John Deere Juvenile Challenge for 2-year-olds and the Adequan Derby Challenge for 3-year-olds.
