Nellie Delaney Tops Year's First Poll

Winter Championship winner headlines the year's inaugural poll.

Q-Racing Journal

The AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow poll has returned for 2014.

While dozens of different horses received votes in the season's first AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Poll for older horses, balloters found clarity at the top with Nellie Delaney. The second mare ever to win the $156,250 Los Alamitos Winter Championship (G1), she received 105 out of a possible 110 points in the voting.

New Mexico stalwart TF Featured Effort, winner of the KOFX-Radio Handicap (G2) and West Texas Maturity (G3) at Sunland Park, checked in second this week just a single point over Viva Mi Corazon. The latter captured the $196,600 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) against fellow 3-year-olds.

Rylees Boy, who closed 2013 ranked No. 2 among the older horse set and was No. 1 at the final 2012 rankings two seasons ago, debuted this season at No. 8 following his third-place finish in the Los Al Winter Championship.

Pollsters evaluated only horses who have started at least once in 2014 to date, gathering the first of the season's weekly rankings. The AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com National Top 10 Poll is released every Wednesday through the end of the year, and a separate poll for 2-year-olds is added annually in late spring.
