Women Behind racing reunion planned for fall at Los Alamitos.

Carol Cooper, a board member of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association, said that plans are underway to once again hold a Women Behind Racing Reunion during Los Alamitos Equine Sale weekend on Friday, October 3, at Los Alamitos Race Course.
Cooper is one of the founding members of Women Behind Racing that was very active at Los Alamitos during the late 1980s through the mid 1990s. Women Behind Racing held a reunion event a couple of years ago on Equine Sale weekend.
“We put the event together in about two months and we had over 80 ladies show up for the reunion,” Cooper said. “We are hoping that with a little more notice that we can have over 200 ladies join us this time around. Will it happen? I don’t know, but we are sure going to try. We are inviting ladies in the industry, whether they’re old, young or new to racing.”
Cooper still remembers the day that the Women Behind Racing was formed.
“We had a meeting at Los Alamitos Race Course back when Marge Everett owned the racetrack,” she said. “Shirley Schvaneveldt and her daughters helped organize it as did my good friend, Barbara Rhynes, who has since passed away. Janet (VanBebber) James, Jill Treasure and many other ladies joined us for that first meeting. Jill named us Women Behind Racing. We eventually got some horsemen involved. Denny Ekins and James Lackey helped us out and Bob Baffert also helped out with some of our events. At one point we had around 150 members.”
Women Behind Racing published a popular cookbook featuring recipes from many of their members and also organized a fashion show. Cooper is now excited to once again have the opportunity to reunite with past members and new faces in racing.
“We want this to be a great event,” she added.
