May 14, 2014
Champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. is quickly approaching the all-time record for wins by a jockey. Going into Thursday night racing at Remington Park, Carter needs eight wins to break the standard.
The record for wins by a Quarter Horse jockey is 3,631, belonging to retired Louisiana rider Alvin “Bubba” Brossette. Carter currently has 3,624 victories and has been named to ride six Quarter Horse races on Thursday at Remington Park.
Carter has a mount in all 11 Quarter Horse races on Friday night at Remington Park. He will ride five such races on Saturday.
Carter, a native of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, holds numerous records. The Oklahoma City resident is the sport's all-time leading jockey by money earned with more than $64.8 million, and the all-time leader by race starts with nearly 23,000 starts. He has also been voted the AQHA Champion Jockey 10 times in his career, winning that prestigious title in 1993, 1997, 2003-2008 and again from 2011-2012.
He has been the leading jockey during the Remington Park Quarter Horse season 16 times, winning 10 consecutive titles coming into the current season. Carter is currently in his regular spot at the top of the Remington Park standings with 54 wins for the season. He is 12 ahead of Jimmy Brooks who is in second-place with 42.
Remington Park’s 2014 American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season continues Thursday through Sunday, May 15-18. Racing is underway at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
