Last To Fire is set to make his 2014 debut in the Vessels Maturity trials.

World champion Last To Fire, the winner of the Champion of Champions (G1) and two additional Grade 1 races in 2014, posted his second workout of the year when he covered 350 yards from the gate in :17.60 on May 20 at Los Alamitos. Owned by Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas, the gelding by Walk Thru Fire is being pointed to make his 2014 debut in the Vessels Maturity (G1) trials on Sunday, June 15.

“There’s three more weeks left before he makes his (2014) debut,” said Avila’s son, Jose Avila. “Eduardo Nicasio was on him for the workout and he said that the horse felt really good. He looked really good to me. The horse is happy after this tightener. I saw him on Sunday morning and he looks very fit.”

Avila and Cuevas also own Turbulent Times, the winner of the Golden State Million Futurity (G1) last year at Los Alamitos, who over the weekend qualified to the Ruidoso Derby (G1) after posting the 10th-fastest time.

“Eduardo rode him in the trials and he said that the horse felt very strong at the end,” Jose Avila added. “It was a thrill to see him run out there. He looked very relaxed and I’m looking forward to seeing him run in the final in two weeks. He came out of the race looking good.”
