Zia Park reached the $1 million mark for single-day wagering handle for the third time in the racetrack’s 10-year history on Monday, October 6. The $1,019,449 wagered on Monday’s 11 races was the third-highest ever for the Hobbs, New Mexico track. Through 23 days of its 56-day racing season in 2014, Zia Park’s average daily handle is $484,177, a 35.2-percent increase from this point in the season in 2013.
“We’re thrilled with how well our races are being received and hope to continue this outstanding momentum for the remainder of the meet,” said Director of Racing Operations Fred Hutton. “Having our races reach more simulcast facilities and a larger television audience this year has showcased some of the exciting things happening at Zia Park.”
Zia Park set a single-day handle record of $1,556,209 on last year’s inaugural Land of Enchantment Day on November 27, 2013. Monday’s single-day handle was just $550 shy of the track’s second-highest total of $1,019,999 from the 2008 New Mexico Cup Day on November 9, 2008.
This year’s Land of Enchantment Day — featuring seven stakes races worth a total of $1.1 million highlighted by the $300,000 Zia Park Oaks — will take place on Wednesday, November 26. Along with the Thanksgiving Eve Racing Festival that night at Zia Park’s sister racetrack, Penn National, the Land of Enchantment stakes will conclude the nationwide $5 million Penn Gaming Racing Challenge launched this year.
