The New Mexico track's 72-day season features 16 Quarter Horse stakes

Sunland Park opens its 72-day season with a nine-race program on Friday.

Sunland Park Racetrack will open its 72-day meet with a nine-race program on Friday. Post time for the first race is 12:45 p.m. (MST).

Sunland Park’s stakes schedule features 16 races for American Quarter Horses. The track’s first Quarter Horse stakes, Saturday’s 400-yard, $85,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1), has attracted 11 entries, topped by graded stakes winners Major Moonflash and Jess Got Issues.

Other Quarter Horse stakes highlights include the 400-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1) on December 27; the 400-yard, $65,000 West Texas Maturity (G3) on March 12; the 400-yard, $65,000 West Texas Derby (G3) on April 2; the 300-yard, $140,000-added New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) on April 9; and the 300-yard, $100,000-added West Texas Futurity (G2) on April 16.

The inaugural running of the 400-yard, $250,000-guaranteed Sunland Park Juvenile Championship, will be run on December 27. In addition, the track will offer one stakes in the Bank of America Racing Challenge program, the 440-yard, $100,000 Bank of America New Mexico Championship Challenge (G1) on April 16.

For the most part, Sunland Park will offer racing on a Friday-through-Sunday and Tuesday schedule. There will be no live racing on Friday, December 25, but there will be live racing on the following Monday, December 28.

Post time for the first race will be 12:45 through February 16. From February 19 through closing day, April 19, post time will be 1:30 p.m.
