Remington Opens March 6

Remington hosts a stakes schedule worth $5.3 million.

Remington Park will open its meet in early March.

The 2015 Remington Park American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season will run from March 6 through May 30. The schedule of stakes races increases to 40 offerings this year and estimated total purse value of $5.3 million.

The kickoff stakes races take place on Sunday, March 8, as the $50,000 Eastex Handicap (G2), long the first graded event of the Remington Park season, helps close the opening weekend. The $70,000 Mighty Deck Three is also scheduled for March 8 and is the first of 15 stakes races scheduled for Oklahoma-bred runners.

The $350,000-est. Oklahoma Futurity (G2) is the first of three major Quarter Horse futurities in the Remington Park season. The Oklahoma Futurity is the longest running such race in the sport, having been contested yearly since 1947. The 74th renewal of the Oklahoma Futurity will take place on Saturday, March 21, with an entire card of trials to determine qualifiers to be held on March 7.

The $775,000-est. Remington Park Futurity (RG2) headlines the rich card of racing set for Saturday, April 18. The $275,000-est. Remington Park Derby and the $100,000 Remington Park Juvenile are also set for April 18. Those three races combine for well over $1 million in purse money, establishing the top state-bred program of its kind in the sport. Trials for the Remington Park Futurity will be held over two nights on April 3 and 4. Trials for the Remington Park Derby will be on April 2.

The $1 million Heritage Place Futurity (G1) tops the major 2-year-old races for Quarter Horses with the final on the last night of the season, Saturday, May 30. Headlining the Mega-Card of rich racing, featuring eight stakes events, the Heritage Place Futurity will be accompanied by the $250,000-est. Heritage Place Derby (G2) and the $250,000 Remington Park Championship (G1) among five other major events.

Trials for the Heritage Place Futurity will be run over two programs on May 8 and 9 with trials for the Heritage Place Derby on May 10.

Other Grade 1 races for Quarter Horses include the $100,000 Leo Stakes on March 28 and the restricted $100,000 Sooner State Stakes on May 2. Both events are for older horses, 3-years-old and older, at 400 yards. The Sooner State Stakes is for Oklahoma-breds.

The $100,000 Bank of America Remington Park Challenge Championship (G2) leads the Challenge stakes on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10. Also on the program, the $50,000 Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge (G3) and the $40,000 Merial Oklahoma Distaff Challenge.

The Oklahoma Speedfest program of four Oklahoma-bred stakes races will be held on Sunday, May 24, with the restricted Grade 3, $70,000 Easy Date Stakes for fillies and mares, 3-years-old and older, leading the card.

In addition to the Red Cell Remington Park Distance Challenge at 870 yards on May 10, the longer running stakes competitors have opportunities in the $50,000 SLM Big Daddy Stakes (550 yards) on March 14; the $50,000 Pauls Valley Stakes (G3, 870 yards) on April 2 and the $50,000 Remington Park Distance Handicap (G3, 870 yards) on May 30.

All purses for futurities and derbies are estimated based on the value of the races in 2014.

Regular post times for racing during the 2015 season will be 6 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with afternoon racing at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays. Earlier post times will take place on Kentucky Derby Day, Saturday, May 2 and Preakness Stakes Day, Saturday, May 16.
