Runaway Wave has become American Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leading broodmare by money earned.
Runaway Wave (Runaway Winner-In The Curl (TB) by Shelter Half), takes the scepter from 2015 American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame inductee Corona Chick. Runaway Wave’s total progeny earnings are $3,643,186.
Corona Chick had 16 foals, 14 of which were race starters. Her foals earned $3,625,157 on the racetrack. The mare, who died in 2013, held the title of all-time leading broodmare for 13 years after taking it from Native Parr, the dam of Refrigerator.
Runaway Wave is owned by Dan and Michelle Lucas’ Lucas Racing Inc. of New Market, Maryland, and was bred by Dan and Allison Lucas in 1995.
In her racing career, the gray mare won or placed in nine of 16 starts and earned $79,183. She was third in the 1998 Dash For Cash Derby (G2) and fourth in the Texas Classic Derby (G1). She also was a finalist in the 1997 Dash For Cash Futurity (G2) and 1999 Las Damas Handicap (G2).
Runaway Wave has 38 registered foals. Of those, 28 are starters and 23 have returned as winners. She is a dam of distinction and was the broodmare of the year in 2005.
Her runners are led by champion Ocean Runaway, who earned $1,642,498 on the track, and was the sport’s champion 2-year-old, 2-year-old colt and 3-year-old colt in 2004-05. To date, he has sired the earners of more than $7 million, including champion American Runaway.
She is also the dam of 2006 world champion Wave Carver, who earned $1,005,946 in his racing career. He was also the champion 3-year-old colt and champion 3-year-old that year, and has sired the earners of more than $6.2 million.
Runaway Wave also produced Grade 1 winner Trisk ($254,233); Grade 1-placed Sir Runaway Dash ($120,706); stakes winners Little Surfer ($102,749), Aquafina ($184,788), The Ocean King ($41,000) and Whip Curl ($24,853); and stakes-placed runners Bring The Bling ($67,320), Seaside ($37,996) and Surf Dog ($37,013).
Sir Runaway Dash has sired the earners of more than $1.4 million. Another foal, Bill Cole, is the sire of earners of nearly $1 million.
Runaway Wave achieved the No. 1 all-time leading broodmare honor on December 14, when Double Bar S Ranch’s Smile N Wave broke her maiden at Los Alamitos.
Her record is likely to grow. In addition to the active runners she has on the track, she has six 2-year-olds and one yearling.
