With the horse racing industry in a state of flux in Alberta, management at the province’s newest track -- Century Downs in Calgary -- has not ruled out the possibility of American Quarter Horses racing there in the future.
“I know the one question I get over and over again when I’m in Calgary and what we see on our Facebook page, etcetera, is, ‘When are the thoroughbreds coming?” Century Downs general manager Paul Ryneveld said. “We built the facility with the belief that we’d have both breeds (Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds) racing here, and we want to have both breeds — actually, we want to have the Quarter Horses, as well — racing here.”
A longtime racing industry executive, Ryneveld is familiar with Quarter Horse racing, as he once served as director of racing at Sunland Park in New Mexico.
