The first Sam Thompson Memorial Scholarships will be handed out later this year.

The Sam Thompson Memorial Foundation will award its first scholarships to youth from the horse racing community for the 2016-17 school years.

Scholarships are open to graduating seniors or youth currently enrolled in college or who wish to attend a technical or vocational school whose family is involved in the horse racing community.

Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or proof of completed GED and plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college, technical or vocational school.

There will be five scholarships available, each named after past recipients of the Sam Thompson Memorial Award: Roy Brooks, Gilbert Ortiz, G.R. Carter Jr., Cody Jensen and Eddie Garcia. The amount has yet to be decided.

For more information or to download the application, visit the Sam Thompson Memorial Foundation website.

In related news, there will be a silent auction held at the Ruidoso Select Sale on September 2-4 to help raise funds.

The foundation works in honor of jockey Sam Thompson, who suffered a fatal riding accident in 2008. One of the leaders in the jockeys’ room during his riding career, Thompson was a Jockeys’ Guild senator, the room representative at Los Alamitos, and a council member of the Los Alamitos division of the Race Track Chaplaincy of America.
