A memorial bronze honoring the late Sam Thompson was unveiled during a recent winner's circle ceremony at Los Alamitos Racecourse.
The bronze was created by nationally reknowned equine artist Jim Stuckenberg. The bronze depicts Thompson aboard two-time champion Corona Kool, who he rode to victory in several stakes at Los Alamitos, including the 1999 Los Alamitos Million Futurity (G1) and the inaugural running of the Charger Bar Handicap (G1) in '01.
A plaque including the names of the donors to the bronze was also part of the ceremony. The bronze will be on permanent display at Los Alamitos.
Thompson died at the age of 36 in 2008, after he was injured in a spill at Los Alamitos in December of that year. Click here for more information on the Sam Thompson Memorial Foundation for Disabled Jockeys. Access the foundation's Facebook page here.
