Evangeline Downs Honors Its Fall Meet Champions

The track ended its 46-night Quarter Horse season on Saturday.

Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, Louisiana, ended its 46-date Quarter Horse meet on Saturday.

David Alvarez repeated as leading jockey during the 46-date Evangeline Downs meet, as the track ended its 2016 Quarter Horse meet on Saturday.

Alvarez rode the winners of 41 races from 214 mounts, three more than runner-up John Hamilton, who won 38 races from 229 mounts. Hamilton topped all Evangeline riders in purse earnings with $835,022.

Alvarez and Hamilton tied for Evangeline Downs' 2015 jockey crown with 40 wins each.

Orlando Orozco led all Evangeline trainers with 19 wins from 160 starters, two more than runners-up Lanny Keith, Trey Ellis, and Carlos Saldivar. Keith topped all trainers in starter earnings at $629,701.

Hamilton and Keith teamed up to win Evangeline Downs' -- and the state of Louisiana's -- richest horse race, the November 19, $1-million Louisiana QHBA Futurity (RG1), with Tate Farms' TF Racee Runaway.

Evangeline's leading owner, Ricardo Saul Castillo's Triple C Racing Stables LLC, won nine races from 25 starters, two more than runner-up Jose O. Barron. Tate Farms was the meet's leading owner in purse earnings with $492,410.
