Sunland Park Racetrack in southern New Mexico took entries Friday morning for its February 26 racing program, its first live racing card in more than a month.
Racing at Sunland Park has been shut down since January 22, when its stable area and three nearby training centers were put into quarantine by the New Mexico Livestock Board due to an EHV-1 outbreak.
A total of 89 horses -- 46 Thoroughbreds and 43 American Quarter Horses -- were entered in nine races. One of the Quarter Horse races, the 350-yard, $50,000 KOFX Radio Overnight Stakes, drew a field of nine, including graded stakes winner Mad About The Moon.
The barn areas at Sunland Park and Frontera Training Center are still under quarantine, and no outside shippers are allowed to enter the track's races until the quarantine is lifted. Sunland Park's revised condition book is available from Equibase.com.
