Jockey Ivan Carnero was the winner of three stakes races this month, including a dominating win aboard Jess Good Candy in the Ruidoso Derby (G1). Those big wins and recently wrapped up riding title at Remington Park led him to being named the AQHA-Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Month for the second month in a row month after winning previously in May and now once again for June. The award is voted on by a panel of Quarter Horse racing experts for riding accomplishments and achievements for the previous month of racing.

With Carnero aboard Jess Good Candy would push his record to seven wins for seven starts with a tour-de-force victory in the purse record$1,068,631 Ruidoso Derby at Ruidoso Downs on June 11 for trainer Clinton Crawford.

The 400-yard romp had longtime horsemen comparing him to all-time Quarter Horse greats after he easily won the 400-yard contest by 1 3/4lengths. Jess Good Candy made the Ruidoso Derby a humbling experience for his competitors.

The Carnero-ridden colt started well from the outside post position and appeared to have the outside half of the racetrack all to himself. Carnero allowed Jess Good Candy to settle into his long, powerful stride and the race was, essentially, over.

The Amarillo native would follow up that big win with another the next afternoon at the same venue when he captured the Ruidoso Downs Juvenile Invitational aboard Apolitical Scout trained by Crawford as well. Apollitical Scout rolled to a dominating 1 ¼ length win over Princess Of Torts while breaking her maiden with the win in the Invitational.

Earlier in the month of June, Carnero was the first Quarter Horse jockey in 18 seasons to win a riding title at Remington Park that was not named G.R. Carter Jr. With Carter’s retirement in December of 2015, Carnero would win his first title at the elite Oklahoma Quarter Horse meeting in only his fourth season of riding.

For the month Carnero lead all riders in AQHA earnings for the month with $853,086. He won with 5 of his 33 mounts while finishing second eight times and third twice in the month of June.
