Marfilous - A Joy for Owner/Trainer Martin Trejo
By Martha Claussen
On Saturday, July 2, at Delta Downs, a competitive group of 2-year-olds will ignite sparks in the $271,950 Firecracker Futurity (G2).
Marfilous, a gray filly by Ivory James owned and trained by Martin Trejo, won the first of six Firecracker Futurity trials on June 11 and is the fastest heading into the 350-yard final.
Bred in Texas by red-hot breeder Bobby D. Cox, she will be making her fourth start this weekend, and has won her last two races. She broke her maiden in trials for the Harrah's Entertainment Futurity (G3) at Louisiana Downs. Although she finished a disappointing seventh in the final to Duponte, her Delta Downs form has been flawless.
Trejo acquired Marfilous for $9,500 at the 2015 TQHA Yearling Sale – the same sale Duponte was purchased at for $6,700.
"She was a good looking filly," said Trejo. "Ivory James is a great stallion. This was the first foal from the dam (Verrsace). I really liked her conformation."
Trejo, 44, was born in Chihuahua, Mexico and resides in Dallas. He has been involved in the Quarter Horse industry for eight years; training on his own for the last three.
With much of his success in Louisiana, Trejo has trained his share of stakes winners including First Prize Denim, winner of the 2015 Laddie Futurity (RG2) for J F Racing Farm LLC at Delta Downs and Ana L. Alvadrez's Scooter Prize, who has won 10 career efforts, including three graded stakes.
"It's too early to compare Marfilous to some of my other top horses," said Trejo. "But she beat Duponte (Heritage Place and Harrah's Futurity winner) in trials for the Harrah's Futurity."
Marflous will break from post position six on Saturday night under current leading Delta Downs rider, David Alvarez.
"She came back from her trial in good shape," added Trejo. "I have confidence in David, who is a great jockey and works hard in the mornings."
Trejo was the 12th-ranked Quarter Horse trainer in the country last year with 73 wins and $1.2 million in purses.
The winner's share of this year's Firecracker Futurity will be $135,975 which would certainly start off Trejo's second half of 2016 with a bang!

Handicapping the Firecracker Futurity
by John Hernandez
Ten lightly raced 2-year-olds, including five fillies, will have a shot at the big money in Saturday’s $271,950 Firecracker Futurity, the richest open-bred stakes race of the season at Delta Downs.
The Texas-bred filly Marfilous, a daughter of Ivory James who is owned and trained by Martin Trejo, topped all qualifiers by posting a time of :17.689 for 350 yards in her June 11 trial over a muddy strip under leading jockey Daniel Alvarez.
Track announcer Don Stevens reminds handicappers not to overlook the horse drawn down on the inside, Sizzlin Stewart, conditioned by top Delta Downs trainer Kenneth Roberts Sr.
“Sizzling Stewart was the runner-up in the trial won by the second-fastest qualifier Platinum FDD,” Stevens noted. “But he barely got into the final with a time of :17.887.”
“He’s in good hands with Kenny Roberts, his veteran jockey Gilbert Ortiz stays on, and the gelding already has a stakes victory, the Old South Futurity here in May, on his record,” Stevens added. “The weather has improved, the track is drying out, so the inside post shouldn’t affect his chances.”
Ortiz rode another trials winner, the filly Dash For A Lil Cash, who runs for owner Erin Chrisman Goings out of the barn of sharp trainer Michael Taylor.
A daughter of Tempting Dash out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Kerrys Lil Jess, Dash For A Lil Cash has won her only two lifetime starts and new rider Joe Badilla Jr. will try to keep her streak going.
Erin Goings has a second undefeated filly in the race, Jess Cruzin The Mall, a daughter of Spit Curl Jess out of the Corona Cartel mare Rock The Mall, who rallied late to win her trial.
In the end, the proven stakes winner Sizzlin Stewart gets the nod on the short list of contenders, with Platinum FDD and Marfilous in the mix. Add Dash For A Lil Cash to make the selections:
