Jockey Alfonso Lujan reached a milestone of 2,000 wins on February 28, winning a maiden claimer at Louisiana Downs aboard Manuel Alvarez’s homebred MDA Miss Jess Roll.
Lujan was born in Pecos, Texas, and began riding when he was 19. He made his first official start in 1997, and since that time has booted home the earners of more than $26.2 million from 13,554 starts. He is one of only 16 jockeys to ever reach the 2,000 win milestone.
A resident of Elgin, Texas, and a familiar face on the Texas-Louisiana circuit, Lujan has ridden Grade 1 winners including Okey Dokey Fantasy, Acorn and Kool Country Man, as well as Restricted Grade 1 winners Vals Warrior, Senor Seabolt, Snowy Alibi and Dealagame.
