Zia Park Releases 2016 Stakes Schedule

Zia Park's 2016 meet breaks from the gate on September 13.

Zia Park has released its stakes schedule for its 2016 Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred meet, which opens September 10.

More than $3.85 million in stakes purses will be distributed to both breeds during Zia Park’s 56-day season. The track’s Quarter Horse stakes schedule will be highlighted by two open graded stakes, the 400-yard, $300,000-est. Hobbs America Futurity (G2) and 440-yard, $175,000-est. Hobbs America Derby (G3), both of which will be run on October 9.

Other major open stakes include the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Championship (G1) on November 23, and the 440-yard, $200,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship (G1) on December 4. Last year's Zia Park Championship was won by Brian and Dana Stroud's JRC Callas First, the sport's 2014 world champion.

Once again, Zia Park’s stakes schedule will be highlighted by the $2-million New Mexico Cup on Sunday, October 30. Twelve state-bred stakes will be contested that day, including four for Quarter Horses -- the 400-yard, $275,000-est. New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2), the 440-yard, $200,000-est. New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2), the 440-yard, $170,000-added Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1), and the 870-yard, $140,000-added New Mexico Cup 870 Championship (R).
