Sunland Park Expected to Ask for All-Thoroughbred Meet

The track is asking to break from its traditional mixed-meet format.

Sunland Park Racetrack is expected to ask the New Mexico Racing Commission for a 2016-17 all-Thoroughbred meet.

Sunland Park Racetrack management is expected to ask the New Mexico Racing Commission for an all-Thoroughbred meet for 2016-17.

The commission will hold a Race Dates meeting in Albuquerque on Wednesday, May 18, one day before its regular monthly meeting on May 19. According to reports Sunland Park will ask to conduct a 72-day Thoroughbred meet to begin in December 2016. The track has conducted a mixed-meet format, including Quarter Horses, since it opened in 1959.
