Ruidoso Downs Supports NMRC Hair Testing

The commission is moving forward on research on out-of-competition testing.

Press release

Ruidoso Downs Racetrack has announced that it supports the New Mexico Racing Commission's efforts to improve accuracy in hair testing.

New Mexico Racing Commission chairman Ray Willis has said that the agency has taken some hair samples from horses for informational purposes, and this could lead to more precise out-of-competition testing in racehorses .

The NMRC is moving forward with this project, according to Willis. Hair testing is a procedure being advanced for the detection of illegal drugs.

“Ruidoso Downs strongly supports this effort,” said Ruidoso Downs’ president and general manager Shaun Hubbard. “We are the home of the All American Triple Crown and a total of seven Grade 1 races. We are vigilant and strive for the highest integrity standards. The safety of the jockeys and horses, along with fair competition for our horseplayers, is always our goal.

“We are thankful for the dedication and work by the New Mexico Racing Commission," he added.
