Century Downs Inc. has been given the green light to build a racetrack in the Edmonton, Alberta, area.

Horse Racing Alberta announced that Century Casinos Inc. has been awarded the right to build a new facility in the Edmonton area that will include a one-mile track and casino.

Century Casinos Inc. operates Century Downs in Balzac, a suburb of Calgary.

The cost of the new facility will be $50 million.  According to Paul Ryneveld, racing manager at Century Downs, racing will begin in the third quarter of 2018.

Century was bidding with three other groups.

"They met all of the qualifications and had the experience in gaming and horse racing," said Shirley McClellan, CEO of Horse Racing Alberta, a government-appointed non-profit corporation that regulates racing in Alberta.
