Iconic Races Dot Ruidoso Downs' 2017 Stakes Schedule

Seven Grade-1 Quarter Horse stakes are featured.

The All American Futurity, Quarter Horse racing's richest and most prestigious race, will top Ruidoso Downs' 2017 stakes schedule. The 440-yard, $3-million stakes will be contested on closing day, September 3.

When the Ruidoso Downs’ summer season starts with the first of two days of trials to the Grade 1, $1-million Ruidoso Futurity on May 26, another season of world-class Quarter Horse racing will begin.

Once again, Ruidoso's stakes schedule will be headed by the 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1) on closing day, September 3, Quarter Horse racing's richest and most prestgious race. Last year's All American winner, Charles Robinson's Imperial Eagle, is being pointed to Ruidoso's three Grade 1 derbies: the Ruidoso Derby on June 10, the Rainbow Derby on July 22, and the All American Derby on September 3.

Other prominent Ruidoso Quarter horse stakes include the 350-yard, $1-million Ruidoso Futurity (G1) on June 11, and the 400-yard, $1-million Rainbow Futurity (G1) on July 23. To help prepare 2-year-olds for Ruidoso's lucrative stakes schedule, the track will hold 300-yard training races from May 8-10.

The top New Mexico-breds in training will be in the spotlight during Zia Festival weekend, July 29-30. There will be 12 stakes for state-breds during the weekend, including five for Quarter Horses, topped by the 400-yard, $400,000-est. Zia Futurity (RG1) on July 30.

Last year, seven of the 10 AQHA champions from 2016 raced at Ruidoso Downs.
