North Dakota Horse Park has been granted funds for its 2017 meet.

The North Dakota Racing Commission has granted $350,000 in purse and promotional funds to North Dakota Horse Park in Fargo.

The commission granted the park the funds -- $125,000 in purse funds and $225,000 in promotional funds -- during its meeting in Bismarck on February 23.

The funds, which equal about $30,000 more than NDHP general manager Mike Schmitz initially requested for six days of racing, mean that night racing might make an appearance at the track this year.

"It's a sign of the health of the racing industry in our state," Schmitz said. "We have more funds because the business of horse racing in North Dakota is a lot better than it's been in years. That's the real exciting part. It will help us, the fans and, of course, the horsemen."
