The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission on Monday approved Horse Racing Alberta and Century Casinos' plan to build a $50-million racetrack near Edmonton.

The new track will replace Northlands Park, which is scheduled to close on June 30, 2018.

"It was the news we were certainly hoping for, and it really a good news day for the horse racing industry in the province," said Horse Racing Alberta chief executive officer Shirley McClellan.

The new track will be called Century Mile and feature live racing on a one-mile oval.
