Opening day of the 2017 Quarter Horse season at Prairie Meadows is still 14 weeks away, but the racetrack has already released its first condition book. The Quarter Horse season opens on Saturday, August 19 and will continue through Saturday, October 14. The first condition book covers the initial 14 days of the 26-day meet.

The book is available online at and will soon be sent to horsemen via mail. Stall applications, which are due Wednesday, July 12, are also available online and will be distributed by mail at the end of the week. Stall applications should be returned to Prairie Meadows’ racing office.

Prairie Meadows will offer 21 Quarter Horse stakes races this year. These races include five Challenge Championship events highlighted by the G1 $330,000-guaranteed Bank of America® Challenge Championship for three-year-olds and up. The Challenge Championship races will be held on Saturday, October 14 and will close out the Quarter Horse season at Prairie Meadows. The races will be ran at the classic Quarter Horse distance of 440 yards.

The final day of the season will also include four traditional season-ending stakes races including the Jim Bader Futurity (IA), the Polk County Derby (IA), the Altoona Derby, and the Valley Junction Futurity.
The Valley Junction Futurity nomination list currently numbers 84 2-year-old hopefuls, including nine from 2016 leading owner, Tom Scheckel.
