Canterbury Park Releases Quarter Horse Stakes Schedule

The track's schedule is topped by the $165,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity.

Canterbury Park has released its 16-race, $665,000-est. American Quarter Horse stakes schedule for its 2018 season, which runs May 4-September 15.

Once again, Canterbury's Quarter Horse stakes schedule will be topped by the 350-yard, $165,000-est. Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity on July 8. The Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity will share top billing that day with the 400-yard, $75,000-est. Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby.

The 300-yard North Star State Stakes (R) for Minnesota-breds will be run for the first time on June 3. Also, the 870-yard Mean Competitor Stakes will return to Canterbury's schedule and will be contested on August 10.

“Quarter horse racing is an important part of our program and has a long history at Canterbury,” said track president Randy Sampson. “Every season some of the fastest horses in the Midwest break from our starting gate chasing what is one of the best purse structures around.”

Purses for the Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby (R) and Minnesota Quarter Horse Futurity (R) have increased to $50,000-added. The purse for the Bob Morehouse Stakes (R) has been boosted to $35,000-added.

Canterbury Park's stakes schedule also includes two regional Bank of America Racing Challenge stakes, both of which are slated for July 4: the 400-yard, $40,000-added Bank of America Canterbury Park Championship Challenge, and the 400-yard, $25,000-added Boehringer Ingelheim Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge. The winners of these races will earn berths to the November 17 Bank of America Challenge Championships to be held on at Los Alamitos Racecourse.
