Los Alamitos Racecourse has renamed its La Primera del Ano Derby for 3-year-old fillies, effective in 2020.

The stakes, which was first run in 1978 and first achieved graded status five years later, will be known as the Los Alamitos Oaks and will offer a projected purse of $400,000.

“The recent announcement of the spin off from the All American Derby and Rainbow Derby of an ‘Oaks’ race for 3-year-old fillies at Ruidoso was a welcomed concept," said Los Alamitos Racecourse owner Ed Allred.  (We) have decided to enhance the former La Primera Del Ano by renaming it the Los Alamitos Oaks, with a $125,000-added purse, $350,000 guaranteed and projected purse of more than $400,000."

The 400-yard trials for the Los Alamitos Oaks will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2020, with the final scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2020. These are the traditional dates on the stakes schedule occupied by the La Primera del Ano Derby.

“Los Alamitos will continue its commitment to filly and mare racing with the Grade 1, $100,000 Charger Bar, Grade 1, $125,000 Mildred Vessels, Grade 3 Las Damas Handicap, Grade 3 Miss Princess Handicap, Denim N Diamonds Handicap, La Pacifica Handicap, Ivan Ashment Handicap, California Breeders Freshman Fillies Stakes, Restricted Grade 3 California Breeders Matron Stakes, California Breeders Debutante Stakes and frequent overnight handicaps and allowance and claiming races," Allred said. “Please don’t forget as with all futurities and derbies sponsored by Los Alamitos Race Course, there are no administrative and advertising fees. One-hundred percent of the fees are added to the purse of the race.”

The inaugural Los Alamitos Oaks will be for fillies foaled in 2017. Original nominations close on March 15, 2019. The payment schedule is as follows:

$500               March 15, 2019
