RACE RECORD: Also a maiden winner in his All American trial, Badhabit Jess started his career in the Ruidoso Futurity trials. He crossed the line third but was moved to second in a non-qualifying trial. In the Rainbow trials, he was fourth.
In his All American trial, which was the final trial on the second day, he won by a nose over fellow qualifier No Mires A La Luna.
BREEDER: Donna and Jon McPherson’s Grant Farms LLC is the only breeder to get more than one finalist in the All American Futurity. They also bred Pilot Points Moon, whom they still own.
The Pineville, Louisiana, breeder has since 2012 bred the earners of more than $4.3 million, including graded stakes winners Big Dashing Perry ($350,022), Paint My Pilot ($377,577) and Long Wagon Ho ($154,264).
OWNER: Manuel, Javier and Hermelinda Rodriguez’s La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC seeks its second All American Futurity; they won in 2008 with the striking champion Heartswideopen. The ranch has raced the earners of more than $2.4 million, including Grade 1 winner Jess Significant.
They purchased the horse at last year’s All American Select Yearling Sale for $25,000.
TRAINER: Blane Wood qualified three finalists to the All American Futurity, as well as one to the Derby.
The veteran trainer has since 1975 trained the earner of more than $17 million, including four Rainbow Futurity winners – the most recent being MM Fourinthemorning, who also qualified to the All American.
He seeks his first All American Futurity victory, although his horses have lit the board on multiple occasions. His father, Leo, won the 1978 All American Futurity with Pie In The Sky.
QUALIFYING JOCKEY: Champion jockey Ricky Ramirez knows how to be a winner on and off track. The recent rider of $1 million Rainbow Futurity (G1) winner MM Fourinthemorning, who also qualified to the All American Futurity (G1), Ramirez was also just named this year’s Sam Thompson Memorial Jockey Award winner, which is an award given to a jockey by his or her peers based on personal character on and off the racetrack.
He has ridden more than 1,100 winners and the earners of more than $29.7 million, but is still seeking his first All American Futurity victory. In 2011, he was second on Jess Send Me; in 2014, he rode Sam Crow to a third-place finish in the race.
PEDIGREE: Himself the sire of two qualifiers, the late Mr Jess Perry is also the second sire of three additional qualifiers.
Mr Jess Perry died in the fall of 2017, and will be inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2019. A champion runner, he has to date sired the earners of more than $54 million, making him the No. 3 all-time leading sire. He is the sire of 2010 All American Futurity winner Mr Piloto.
Dam Sheza Bad Habit won the 2011 Merial Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) and earned $164,545 in her racing career. The Vessels-bred mare’s dam is a full sister to champion Old Habits ($680,966).
