BREEDER: American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame member Joe Kirk Fulton’s legacy lives on with the Fulton Quien Sabe Ranches. The Lubbock, Texas-based operation has bred legendary horses for more than 60 years, first under Joe Kirk’s watchful eye, and now with his family carrying on the efforts. In Joe Kirk’s name, horses won more than $18.8 million, including world champions Dashs Dream and Special Leader.
OWNER: The established partnership of R.D. Hubbard, Butch Southway, Johnny Cope and Ray Willis bought this horse for $63,000 at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. They have also raced the likes of champion A Revenant.
TRAINER: C. Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath is a living legend in the American Quarter Horse racing industry. He has trained the earners of more than $28.4 million, including the current and former all-time leading earners, Ochoa and Refrigerator. Both of them were All American Futurity winners for him, as was On A High. He also trained world champion Cold Cash 123 and champion Foxy Moonflash. He greatly reduced his training program at the end of 2015, and currently trains only a few select horses.
QUALIFYING JOCKEY: The affable Cody Jensen has twice won the All American Futurity – in 2005 with Teller Cartel and 2006 with No Secrets Here – and has mount earnings of more than $36.5 million in his 24-year career. The jockey, known for his toughness in overcoming many injuries, has had an admirable career that has included two champion jockey titles and the peer-elected Sam Thompson Memorial Award, given in 2014.
PEDIGREE: Hotstepper is one of two qualifiers by One Famous Eagle, who is also the second sire of qualifier Hawkeye. One Famous Eagle, a champion runner during his racing career, has from six crops to race sired the earners of more than $20.1 million, putting him at No. 20 on the all-time sires by money earned. He sired 2012 All American Futurity winner One Dashing Eagle in his first crop and was the sire of last year’s winner, Imperial Eagle (and runner-up The Marfa Lights). He is also the sire of three All American Derby qualifiers – De La Eagle, The Marfa Lights and Magestic Eagle.
Hotstepper’s dam line has been cultivated at the Quien Sabe for more than 30 years. Dam Pandorum was a two-time stakes winner who earned $70,437 in her career. This is her second foal. His third dam, Daring Difference, was an All American Futurity finalist and produced the earners of more than $450,000. She was a half sister to the great Mr Eye Opener.
